Marriage. The thought tasted like ash in Sammy’s mouth. She’d never envisioned herself taking vows, promising forever to a man she barely knew. A lie wasn’t quite the right word. More like…a strategic alliance. She’d promised her parents she’d give this marriage her best, to make them proud. She’d give *him* her best, even if she had to manufacture affection.
This house…it was her new home now. Her life, unfolding within these walls. Just before the wedding, her mother had found her, her voice laced with both hope and anxiety.
“Sammy,” she’d said, clutching Sammy’s hands. “I know you didn’t choose this marriage, but I need you to give it everything. You don’t love him now, but you *will* fall in love with him. Cherish him. Ignore his flaws, celebrate his strengths. Be his friend, more than his wife. Take his sadness and fill it with your sweetness, your happiness. Promise me you’ll cherish this relation.”
“I don’t know about love, Mother,” Sammy had replied, her voice small. “But I promise you I’ll always be there for him, even if he doesn’t need me.”
Now, sitting on the bed in their room, the room felt vast and echoing, she felt the weight of that promise. It sounded awkward, even to her own ears.
The door opened, and Will’s sister, Scarlett, entered. It was their first real conversation. Scarlett was older, married, a mother to a sweet little girl.
“So, Sam,” Scarlett said, settling onto the edge of the bed. “Tell me about yourself. Will never talks about you.”
“Well, your brother doesn’t exactly give me much to talk about,” Sammy replied, a wry smile tugging at her lips.
“You two didn’t…talk much before the marriage?” Scarlett asked, her brow furrowed with concern.
“No. He was…busy, I guess.” Sammy shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant. “No time for getting to know each other.”
Will entered the room, the space immediately shifting in temperature. It was decorated for their first night, a gesture Sammy hadn’t noticed before. Scarlett, sensing the change, winked at Will before quickly excusing herself, leaving Sammy and him alone. He ignored her and went straight into the bathroom. He emerged moments later, changed into his usual clothes, and without a word, climbed into bed. He switched off the bedside lamp, and the room plunged into darkness.
Sammy was waiting for him to say *something*. To acknowledge her presence. She felt like he disliked her, his silence a deliberate act of avoidance. She waited, but time stretched on, and he drifted into a deep sleep.
She finally got up to change, and when she emerged from the bathroom, he was still asleep. She went to her side of the bed, but sleep wouldn’t come. He was ignoring her, and the rejection stung, a dull ache in her chest. They were strangers, she knew, but was he forced into this marriage? Could she have said no? Maybe he was just tired, wanting to get to know each other. Tomorrow was a new day. Everything would be better tomorrow.
She woke up in a different room, for a moment she thought this didn’t happen. This was true. She checked his side but he wasn’t there maybe he was downstairs. She got freshen up & went downstairs asking about Will “Where is William?” “we don’t know I thought he is still sleeping” William’s mother & father asked confusing looking at each other “No, he is not in our room” Scarlett interrupted “he went outside to buy something” “what?” sam asked out of curiousity, she is his wife atleast inform or maybe you were sleeping like log so he didn’t wake you up-that’s a kind gesture, you idiot “I’ll call him but i don’t have his number” “here..”his sister gave her number instantly she called him Seeing unknown number he pick up “hello” “hey, its me Sam, where are you?” “I am busy something came up with work, I’ll be late” He hung up, she went for cooking, Will’s mother stopped but she insisted she made her specials for everyone, while cooking she was thinking about Will, he said he is at work & his sister said he went somewhere to buy something, it just didn’t match up Everybody had their breakfast, went in guest room for packing as they were leaving, she was still at dining table waiting for him she want to eat with him. Finally he came at noon, she eagerly went to him “hey, uh......, want to eat something” “I had breakfast outside, so no thank you” He went to his room, she stood there looking at his back but she was hungry, she’ll just talk to him. Will’s mother Giselle called him “will, did you eat?” “Yes, mother” “No, you come down here I want to see you eat in front of me, I know how you eat” “mom.....” “come down right now” Sam just looked amused at their relation, Will sat at dining table & Sam served him, sitting next to him, he took first bite & it was delicious, mouth watering or maybe just hungry but you had some breakfast-he thought “mom, its delicious” “I know but I didn’t make it Sam did” He looked her way, without saying anymore word he finished & went to his room, scarlett went to talk to him “Will, you shouldn’t be rude to her” “why should I be nice to her” “because she didn’t do anything wrong, she is being nice to you & you’re just being absurd. I know the reason for all this but atleast try to be nice to her” Scarlett was right, she is not reason for all this, she is just a collateral damage in his life besides he has to live with her alone in this house so maybe being nice is good, isn’t it? Sam heard everything so maybe he is not happy with this marriage maybe it is just marriage shock, they will get over it, she was hungry not waiting anymore, she brought the food & started eating while watching her favourite cartoons. Okay, I am an adult but I love cartoons they are funny-she thought. Will came downstairs & saw tv on, half eaten plate on table, he switched it off, when he looked over sofa, she was sound sleeping. He has admit it that no matter what reasons are there & what situation they are in she was a beauty, sparkling & gorgeous, who can make any guy beg to be with her, but not him because..... no, no because thats it. When she woke up it was almost evening, she looked around & she was in their room covered with duvet, he put her in bed & covered with duvet so she couldn’t get cold-she thought blushing, no, no blushing. okay he cared for her a little maybe, it was just a good gesture for her for the food, right?. But she was happy good gesture or care she will take all of it atleast he is nice person.
