Prologue

The screen glowed with the promise of connection, a digital echo of hope. It wasn’t about finding ‘the one,’ not really. It was about amusement, a shared experiment between two friends bored with the predictable rhythm of their lives.

Louis’s POV

“I dunno, Lou… this looks a little sketchy, even for you.” Harry’s voice held a familiar blend of amusement and skepticism.

“Oh, lighten up. It’s just a dating site.” Louis scoffed, already navigating the interface of Find-The-One.com. He’d finished setting up both accounts, a task surprisingly quick given the minimal information required. A username, a password, and a general location – that was all. The site boasted complete confidentiality; no profiles, no personal details beyond the basic geographical coordinates.

“We could probably meet better women in person,” Harry continued, shrugging. “Actually *talk* to them.”

Louis conceded the point. “Of course, we could. But we haven’t. Besides, this is just for fun. We’re probably not going to actually meet anyone.” He leaned back, watching Harry’s reaction. The whole thing had been Louis’s idea, spurred by a late-night television advertisement. A random connection, a digital blind date. The appeal lay in its anonymity, its potential for unexpected conversations.

“Alright, accounts are up!” Louis grinned, tilting his head towards Harry. “Let’s have some fun.”

Harry’s grin was wide, mischievous. “I’ll be in my room. Call me if anything interesting happens.” He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, a playful gesture that Louis had come to expect.

Louis laughed, shaking his head at his friend’s predictable silliness. He turned back to his computer, a genuine smile playing on his lips. With a click, he activated the ‘connect’ button, and the site began its calculations. A moment later, a new window appeared, displaying a single line of text.

ME: Hello.
