"Beyonce Knowles?" I raised my hand and the teacher nodded and kept going down the list of names on the roll sheet.
I spent all of nutrition catching up with friends that I haven't talked to all summer. I talked to Shawn for maybe a minute, only kuz I had to tell him I was walking to our english class with someone else. He didn't seem too happy about that, and he had a good reason to not be happy. I was walking with the biggest man hoe of the school, Kirk, but I knew damn well not to do anything that would lead him on. Shit I'm happy with Shawn, I don't need this walking STD to ruin it now. At least Shawn didn't make a scene, and I was greatful for that. However, when we got in the class, I sat down and put my stuff in the seat next to me for Shawn to sit in, but the man hoe sat there thinking I saved it for him. That caused problems when Shawn walked in. By the look I was giving him, Shawn knew it wasn't my fault. Luckily, there was an empty seat on the other side of me, so Shawn sat there.
"So what are you doing after school? I was thinking of going down to the mall and getting some cd's or something. You wanna ride along?"
I looked over at Kirk and he was smiling hard. Is he really stupid? My boyfriend is right next to me, and he's practically asking me out. I know he doesn't think he has something on Shawn, shit Shawn can kill his ass with one punch. I don't want no little boy that has to flex every minute just so he has some kind of tone and definition in his body. Shawn can sit on him and break him into a million pieces. He better watch out before he has the whole football team trying to kill him.
"No thanks, I got plans with Shawn." I said smiling and looking away. I turned to Shawn and he was laughing and shaking his head. I hate him for not helping me out right now, he knows I need it. Oh he's so going to get screwed over next time he needs me.
"I hate you, and you better believe that karma is gonna be a real bitch!" He threw his pencil at me and continued laughing.
"Ey yo Beyonce, I was wondering if I can ask you a question. I know you got a guy and all, but I was thinking about hitting up a pizza place after school. You wanna ride along?" Shawn said in a deep voice. Both of us busted out laughing and the teacher looked back at us. Let's just say Mr.Douglas didn't look too happy to have us sitting next to each other at this moment.
"Sorry, that was my fault." Shawn said raising his hand a little. Mr.Douglas nodded his head and went back to talking. I looked at Shawn and rolled my eyes. "What? I took the blame for it!" He said still laughing.
"You ain't even have to say anything. You could have just kept your head down and not looked up. Now you caused attention from the whole class." I said throwing his pencil back at him. "Anyways, are we really doing something after school?"
He shrugged his shoulders and I grabbed a piece of paper and folded it up. I wrote a quick note on it and threw it at him. He slowly opened it and then looked at me with his eyebrow raised.
"Well?" I said waiting for his answer.
"She's crazy, I heard stories about her. I didn't need your ass messing with her and then having her come after you with a knife or some shit." I nodded and he put the note away.
I guess I should explain what just happened. Well, I simply asked him a question that I needed an answer to, immediately. I asked him why he didn't tell me about Bethany and why he tried so hard to keep me away from her earlier. I can't be mad at him for trying to keep me safe, that's what I wanted him to do. Right? Sometimes, I confuse myself. Yeah I don't want to have to depend on him for safety, but at the same time it's good to know that he's always there if I do need him.
"Anyways, after school, I really want to go to that new food place they opened up by my house. You think you can take me? I came with Kelly this morning, and I know she's not about to take me." He laughed and nodded his head.
It was true, Kelly wasn't driving me anywhere anymore, not after what I did this morning. I took her favorite CD and threw it out of the window kuz her ass was being too wild. I'll buy her a new one, but I can't get in her car until I do. That shit was so worth it though, the look on her face was priceless.
"Make sure it's cool with your little friend over there though."
I looked over at Kirk and he was looking at us. Me and Shawn started laughing but I put my head down so I wouldn't get in trouble. I knew the teacher was bound to look back here again. After about two minutes, I raised my head and Shawn was staring at me.
"How you gonna hide? I had to get stuck with his evil stare, alone! Stop being a baby, take your punishment." I just shook my head and smiled. Take my punishment? Excuse me, that's never gonna happen. I don't have that kind of time.
"I wish this bell would hurry up and ring!" I said frustrated. We've been in here forever, and I knew it was gonna ring any minute, but that any minute was taking forever. Finally it rang and I got up quick.
"Thank the lord! Only one more class and then it's lunch time!" I said grabbing Shawn by the hand and pulling him out with me.
It's time for what seems to be my favorite class already. History baby! Shawn and I got company for that, and their names are Kelly and Roy. I'm so excited, I finally have one of my girls with me. We walked into the class and Kelly was already sitting down. I went and took a seat next to her while Shawn sat behind me.
"Where's Roy?" Shawn asked looking around. Kelly shrugged her shoulders and I looked back at him. "I guess someone got in a fight." He whispered laughing.
I smacked him across the head and looked over at Kelly. She looked really sad, I wish I could help her, but I know I can't. I've been trying to help her all summer, but like I said, some things have changed. It's not the usual Kelly anymore, this one is stuck on being angry or sad. Roy came walking into the class and came towards us. He sat behind Kelly, so he was next to Shawn.
"Where was your ass?" Shawn asked looking at him.
"I had to handle some shit in the office." Roy said showing Shawn a paper. "So, you going to the football meeting after school?"
Shawn looked at me and shook his head. Okay, so he's choosing me over football, I should feel bad about that. Honestly though, I don't. I guess I just feel like that's how things should be. He shouldn't choose other shit over me, I'm supposed to be the most important thing to him if he wants this to work out. Now that I saw he would choose me over it, I can tell him it's okay to go to the meeting. What? Did you think I was gonna let him miss a meeting? This is his life practically, I'm not about to let him screw it up kuz of me.
"Roy, don't worry, he'll be at the meeting." I said smiling. Roy nodded and him and Shawn continued talking.
I looked over at Kelly again and she was just staring off into space. "Kelly, you wanna do something after school with me while we're waiting for the boys to finish?" I asked hoping she would snap out of her daze. She slowly nodded and I just gave up. There's no way this girl is gonna open up, she's been quiet for the past couple of weeks. I can't expect her to open up right away in such a public place.
"You know what's funny?" She looked at me and smiled. "My parents called me a month before school started." I know this seems like nothing, but it really was something to talk about. When they moved, she barely talked to them.
"My mom said something about me having a great opportunity out there for a job and a nice lifestyle. They really want me to go with them, but I want to stay here, with yall." She said getting sad again. "What if they make me go with them one of these days? How do they just expect me to move like that?" She asked almost on the verge of tears. I got close to her and she put her head on my shoulder.
"They wouldn't do that Kelly. They might be telling you all this stuff, but at the end of the day, they are gonna respect your decision. They always have done it, so why would they ruin that now? Come on, they trust you and know that whatever decision you make, will be the right one." It was true, they could be saying all this shit to her, but they would never even think of making her leave. It would have to be her decision, and that's how they have always been. "Give them a little more credit Kelly." She looked up at me and wiped her eyes.
"I guess you're right. But what if I really am missing out on a great opportunity? I mean, even some of my cousins are telling me how good my parents have it out there. What do you think?"
Once again, all the weight falls onto my shoulders. I hate when people do this, ask for my opinion on shit that has nothing to do with me. Yes it's true, I didn't want Kelly to go, but at the same time, it should be her decision and her decision only. What I have to say shouldn't influence her to do one thing or the other.
"I think you should stay."
Yeah, screw whatever I said before. I not only want her to stay, I need her to stay. I'm gonna do my best to get all the ideas of leaving out of her head as quick as I can. She shouldn't be thinking like that in the first place. Seniors aren't supposed to think, we're just supposed to come to school and nap all day. Sometimes, we might take a couple of notes, but that's about it. None of that hard thinking shit.
"Thanks, for everything." She said hugging me. We just stayed like that until the bell rang.
As soon as class started, we took that as our que to shut up and close our eyes. We found the perfect way to sleep on the table so both of us could be comfortable. We were so proud when we figured it out. The next thing I knew, I was being poked in my side. I slowly lifted my head and Shawn was standing there shaking his head at me.
"Come on little baby, the bell rang. We gotta get to your favorite class, lunch!" He said laughing.
I handed him my backpack and I slowly got up. I looked next to me and Roy was getting Kelly up as well. I'm surprised that us two were knocked out and the boys weren't. This is usually the other way around.
"Hurry up woman! I'm carrying your shit, so you gotta listen to me." Shawn said pulling me away from the desk.
We made it to our lockers and I just laid up against the one next to his while he arranged everything inside to fit all our shit. After he was done, he gave me a piggy back ride over to the lunch tables and dropped me off with Michelle. She was sitting down talking to some girl, so I just sat in her lap and rested my head on her shoulder.
"Beyonce, this is Stancia, she came here from Mississippi." Michelle said trying to liven me up. I extended my hand to shake hers, and then went right back to trying to sleep. "Hey Kelly, this is Stancia." Michelle said.
All the sudden, I felt someone pushing me. I opened my eyes and Kelly was trying to make her way onto Michelle's lap as well. I moved over a little so we both could fit and we slowly started drifting off.
"I swear yall do this every year on the first day. Were you guys on the phone all last night with Shawn and Roy?" Michelle asked. I nodded my head and opened my eyes to see Kelly nodding hers as well. Michelle just laughed and continued talking to her new friend.
"Michelle! I'm picking up Rachel after my football shit today so you don't have to worry about it. Okay?" I heard Roy yell. "By the way, who's your cute friend?" As soon as he said that, I opened my eyes and lifted my head up at the same time Kelly did.
"Ha, I knew that would work! Yall two are pathetic!" He said going back to talking to his group of friends. He's grimy!
"He's kinda cute." Stancia said. We all looked at her and she looked scared. "I'm sorry, are one of you dating him?" She asked looking at us. Me and Michelle both pointed to Kelly. "I'm really sorry, I didn't mean it in any disrespectful way." She said trying to reason wtih Kelly.
"It's cool, I don't really care." Kelly said smiling. Me and Michelle both knew better, we had to get Kelly away from this girl before she goes insane and kills her. I got up and pulled Kelly up with me. "Where we going?" She asked brushing off her pants.
"I need to get some food." I said dragging her away. When we were a safe distance, I looked at her and laughed. "You were ready to knock that little girl out when she said that about Roy huh?" I asked. Kelly smiled and nodded. "How long do you think she had before you cut her?" I asked smiling.
"About two more seconds. Good thing you got me away from her." Kelly said laughing.
We went to the lunch lines and got our food, along with some food for Michelle and slowly walked back towards the table.
"You know what's funny? That girl looked like she was about to piss her pants when yall pointed at me. If the fingers were pointed at either you or Michelle, I don't think she would have been as scared." I laughed and nodded my head.
"That's kuz you got crazy painted all over you." She smacked me on the arm and I just looked at her. "Exactly! Now you see I'm right!" I said laughing. She hit me again and started walking faster. "Roy! You better get your wifey before she kills an innocent person!" I yelled.
He looked towards me and then saw her walking fast. He ran towards her and I walked to Michelle.
"What happened with her?" Stancia asked.
I looked at Michelle and rolled my eyes. She took that as her sign to tell that girl to go somewhere. She was really getting on my nerves, and I don't know why. I guess it's kuz she thinks she's the best of friends with us right now. No little girl, we don't even know you exist.
"Um Stancia, I think that girl is calling you." Michelle said pointing to a random girl. Stancia got up and left and I sat down next to Michelle handing her the food. "So, why did Kelly leave?" She asked. I just laughed and shrugged my shoudlers. "You're a damn liar, I know you said something to her, you always do." I just rolled my eyes and kept laughing.
"Fine. I just told her she was crazy." Michelle gasped and put her hand over her heart as if this was news to her.
We ate our food and then just talked to random people until the bell rang. Since we were seniors, we only had four periods. Yeah, we were allowed to leave right after the fourth period, but we decided to stay for lunch today just to catch up. You better believe this is the only time we would do that.
As soon as the bell rang, we all split up and went to our seperate destinations. Shawn and I got in his car, Kelly got in her own, Roy got in his, Michelle got in Samuel's, and we all took off. I had only about two hours before Shawn would have to go back for his meeting, so there wasn't much we could do. Staying at home and watching t.v. was our best bet at this point, and that's exactly what we did. First day is over, thank the lord!
