John's PoV

I took another tiny bite of my soup. Even after a year of eating this crap, it still tastes disgusting. I look up to see that Alex has finished his. God damn!  "You theenk 'e is cute." Laf whispers.

"Knock it off Lafayette."

"Ah, well. I you don't, you steel 'ave Kinloch." He replies, elbowing me. "You are quite the man's man, mon ami."

"Knock it off." I whine.

"But you know eet is true."

"It's not! And it's not my fault there's other gay men here." I whisper defensively. Hope he's gay.  My mind murmurs as I glace over at Alexander. He's staring off into space right now.

"Heh. Well, you are da cutest out of everyone here mon ami." He says, and I blush a little. "You want some free advice? You should geet 'im before someone else does. If you want 'im. And I know you do. A preetty leetle thing like 'im won't last long in here. One way or another, or another." He says, glancing at Alexander as well.

"Yo wassup? Sorry I'm late." Someone says behind me.

"Hercules! What was the hold up?" I cry, turning around. I saw Alexander jump out of the corner of my eye.

"Eh, Jefferson. I'm fine! He's not." He says, seeing Laf's expression. He sits down next to him, then sees Alexander. "Who's this?" He asks.

"Alexander Hamilton. Here for theft, being charged for murder. Awaiting trial. Cellmate to John Laurens." He snaps quickly. Herc glances slyly at me.

"He's a cute one, ay John?"

"Will you two fucking knock it the hell off?!" I yell, causing them to burst out laughing. Alex looks at us.

"So do you care to introduce yourself or am I the only one in this fucking shit hole who has any manners?" He asks, clearly annoyed.

"Sorry dude. Hercules Mulligan. Friends with these two idiots." He smiles, jerking a thumb at me and Laf.

"Hey! We're not idiots!" I complain.

"You are, and you know it." He replies. I roll my eyes. Well, he's not wrong.  I take another bite of the soup, shuddering. Herc takes Laf's spoon out of his hands, then takes a bite of Laf's soup. Laf rolls his eyes and gives Herc a quick kiss on the cheek.

"You know, it'll be better if you just down it in one go." Alexander remarks as I take another tiny bite.

"Are you crazy? Am I so annoying that you're trying to kill me already?" I joke.

"No, I don't find you annoying. But you'll get it over with quicker, and that's always better. It really isn't that bad." He remarks, wiping his finger along the inside of his bowl, then licking his finger. I snort.

"What kind of shit have you been eating, if you can polish that off so fast?"

"Recently shit that's two or three times worse that this. This is he best thing I've eaten in a while. All of my food came from trash cans, so it was always awful. But I got used to it." Wow, that's horrible. How is he not dead, or sick at least if he's been eating like that most of his life?

"Alright boys! Dinner's over!" Someone calls a little bit later. I groaned.

"You're five minutes early, Seabury!" I yell back, standing up. A few ripples of laughter bounced around, Seabury joining in himself.

"If he's five minutes early, why are we all leaving?" Alexander asks me.

"Ah, I'm just kidding. Me and Seabury get along alright, as well as a prisoner and a guard can. He's not too bad." I reply, lining up with everyone else. Alexander follows me and I spot Seabury walking over.

"Alright, back in your cells, you horrible scummy criminals." He says, faking a snarl. Most of us smile. Samuel Seabury is pretty well liked among the in-mates. He's funny and nice, but annoyingly optimistic at times. It's made even me want to strangle them a fair few times. And we get along pretty well. He walks up to me and Alexander. "The new in-mate?" He asks me, nodding at Alex.

"Why is everyone acting like I don't exist, or I'm an idiot!?" He cries, exasperated. Seabury laughs. "He's got spirit. Keep an eye on him for me. And not that  kind of eye on him." He adds meaningfully. I roll my eyes in annoyance. Alexander is kind of attractive, but I barely know him, and he's probably straight anyway.

"Can everyone just knock it off already? Laf, Herc, and now you." I sigh. "Go awaaaaay Sam." I gently push him, and he walks away, laughing. "He's annoying, but we all love him. If we didn't we would have killed him by now. Oh, it's never happened before. But Samuel makes real contact with us and no other guards do." I explain.

"Isn't that some sort of protocol violation or something?" He asks. I shrug.

"Maybe, but here at King's Prison, they're loose." I respond. He mumbles something under his breath. "What was that?"

"Oh, nothing. Just a thought." We walk back into our cell and I throw myself on my bed. The door is slammed and locked behind us. I pull out my old drawing notebook and flip to a new page. I rest my pencil on the paper and let my mind wander as I draw. I do my best drawing that way, when I'm not concentrating on what I'm drawing.

I stop about ten minutes later when my hand starts cramping. I set my pencil down and flex my hand, looking down to see what I drew this time. I do a double take as I see the face of Alexander smiling up at me, half way complete. What the fuck dude?  I think to myself. Apparently my unconscious mind finds Alexander a whole lot more attractive then my conscious mind does. What will that mean later on?  I sigh and put my notebook away. I'm tired, I want to sleep, escape from the shitty prison life. I roll over onto my side, and sleep finds me a few minutes later.
