Chapter 2: The Runaway
For weeks, Hiccup had been secretly training a dragon – a Night Fury, no less. But the weight of his deception crushed him when he realized he was expected to kill his first Monstrous Nightmare. How could he take a life when he’d already befriended one of the most feared dragons of all?
He was trapped. Either he remained and risked exposure, or he ran. The thought of his father’s reaction – the cold disappointment, the accusations of weakness – felt like a physical blow. “You don’t belong,” his father might say. “You’re not my son.” The rejection was unbearable.
Ironically, running away felt like the only way to *earn* his place in the family.
He packed a small bag, slipping out the back door of his house and heading towards Toothless.
“We’re leaving,” Hiccup said, tossing a basket of fish towards his dragon. “Let’s pack up. Looks like you and me are taking a little vacation. Forever.”
Toothless nudged the basket with his snout, a low rumble vibrating in his chest.
“Oh man,” Hiccup sighed, a mixture of sadness and determination swirling within him.
He looked up and saw Astrid perched on a rock, meticulously sharpening her axe. She was a force of nature, and his crush. The sight of her sent a jolt of anxiety through him.
“Argh! What the… uh, uh, what are you doing here?” he stammered.
“I want to know what’s going on,” Astrid replied, her voice level and direct. She jumped down from the rock, her gaze unwavering. “No one gets as good as you do overnight. Especially not you. Start talking. Are you training with someone?”
“Uh, uh, training? I didn’t…” Hiccup stammered, trying to deflect.
“It better not involve this,” Astrid said, grabbing the shoulder pad of his flight suit.
“I-I know this… looks really bad, but…” He started, then froze as Toothless shifted behind Astrid.
Quickly, he turned Astrid towards his dragon. "Astrid! You know what? You're right! I am weird, and this!" He gestured to the suit. "This is just something that makes me feel confident!" He forced a nervous chuckle. “So why don’t you go back to the village and tell everyone that every time I was nowhere to be found, I was actually making amazing outfits!"
Astrid stared at him, her expression a mix of confusion and fear. She blinked slowly, as if trying to decipher his nonsensical explanation.
“You… are so… I’m just going to… go…” she finally muttered, turning and walking away, clearly bewildered.
Hiccup let out a sigh of relief as she disappeared from view.
“Alright, bud. Let’s go!” He mounted Toothless, feeling a surge of adrenaline.
They soared into the sky, Hiccup glancing back at Berk one last time. “I can’t believe I actually did it!” he exclaimed.
The wind whipped through his hair, and the sun warmed his face. He felt a freedom he hadn’t known existed. He could finally be himself, without judgment, without fear.
“This is going to be one hell of a journey, bud!” he shouted, his voice lost in the roar of the wind and the beat of Toothless’ wings.
