The Late Arrival

Y/N’s day began, as it always did, with her mother launching a full-scale assault on sleep.

She shook her violently, tried prying her off the bed, flung open the curtains to let the sunlight attack her face, switched off the fan, and even cranked the television volume until the blaring morning news echoed through the room.

Nothing. Y/N slept on, undisturbed, as peacefully as a baby—as if an earthquake wouldn’t be enough to wake her.

Exhausted and officially defeated, her mother finally gave up. With one last exasperated glance at her completely unresponsive daughter, she grabbed her bag and headed for the door, already late for work.

“Y/N, honey, wake up soon,” she called out gently. “Breakfast is on the table. Heat it up before you eat. I’m leaving now. Love you.”

The door shut.

Y/N

⤷ An hour later…

Reality finally slapped me awake. I shot upright and immediately glanced at the wall clock.

9:35 a.m.

My eyes widened in horror. We were supposed to meet at nine.

“Shoot.”

I practically launched myself off the bed and sprinted to the bathroom. Clothes came off in record time as I turned on the faucet, letting freezing water drench me completely. The shock was brutal—but effective. I scrubbed quickly, rinsed off the last traces of shower gel, and rushed out, barely giving myself time to breathe.

I patted myself dry, faced the mirror, shoved my toothbrush into my mouth, and tied my hair up into a messy bun—all at once, multitasking like my life depended on it.

In my rush, I didn’t even notice the breakfast waiting patiently on the table. Grabbing my bag, I bolted straight out of the house and headed toward the park, hoping my friends hadn’t completely given up on me.

⤷ At the Park

It was about 10:15 a.m. All of Y/N’s friends were impatiently waiting at the park, calling her repeatedly to no response.

Amber: I told you guys, bringing Y/N in the morning was a bad idea. She can *never* wake up on time. She must have forgotten we were even meeting today.

Max: She’s probably on her way, guys. Chill. It’s only been twenty minutes since you all arrived.

Jamie: God knows how long we’d have to wait if we’d told her the actual meeting time. I’m already tired. I can’t stand another minute.

Steven: Take Amber with you and wait on the bench over there. I’ll try calling Y/N again.

(OTP✆)

Steven: Y/N, where are you? We’ve been waiting so long.

Y/N: Hey Steven. I’m so sorry. I overslept. I’m on my way. Wait for me. Sorry, and thank you.

Steven: Okay, come safely. We’re waiting.

(End of OTP✆)

Steven walked over to Jamie and Amber.

Amber: Where is she?

Steven: Almost here.

Jamie: Okay then, let’s wait for her, and then we can start.

(Rose, another friend of theirs, ran toward Jamie, Amber, and Steven.)

Rose (panting): Guys… I have important news.

Amber: Chill, girl. Breathe. How did you know we were here? Did you spy on us?

Rose: Noooo, I might have overheard you all talking about a get-together yesterday.

She stared at them with puppy dog eyes, making a cute pouty face.

Jamie: Stop it, I feel sick already.

Rose: Yah!!!

She playfully smacked Jamie’s arm as Steven continued.

Steven: You were saying something about the news… What is it?

Rose: Yeah, right. About that. My uncle told me that Y/N is getting a scholarship to ****** University. So I did a little research, and it’s in South Korea—one of the TOP universities in the whole wide world.

“WOW” was written on all their faces, mixed with a bit of confusion.

Amber: That’s great. But why wouldn’t Y/N tell us about this?

Rose: She doesn’t know about it yet. My auntie is planning to surprise her.

Jamie: OMG, she’s been missing out on our plans to study so she could go there. She’s going to love it.

Meanwhile, Y/N scanned the park for her friends. Spotting them, she went toward them.

Y/N: Yo guys, sorry I’m late. I kinda overslept. (panting) Wait, I thought Rose wasn’t joining us.

Steven: Yeah, she wasn’t going to join us, but then we found her here.

Y/N: Okay, good.

(Jamie got a call on her phone.)

Jamie: You guys carry on. I have to take this. (She walked aside and answered the call.)

Amber: Let’s go get some snacks. I’m starving.

Rose: There’s a new bakery that opened down the street. I heard they’re pretty famous for snacks. Let’s try that place, hmm?

She looked at us. As Amber opened her mouth to answer, she was cut off by Jamie.

Jamie: Guys, I have important work back at home, so I gotta go. Y’all enjoy.

Y/N: But… okay, fine. Bye.

Everyone said goodbye to Jamie and carried on. Accidentally, while waving goodbye to Jamie, Rose bumped her hand against Y/N’s neck.

Rose: Oh. I’m so sorry. Are you hurt?

Y/N: No, I’m alright. Now let’s go.

⤷ At the Snack Shop

As Steven looked around the bakery, his eyes fell on Y/N’s neck, which unusually looked empty today. Then it struck him—Y/N wasn’t wearing the necklace her dad had given her on her seventh birthday.

Steven: Y/N, did you forget to wear your necklace?

Y/N: No, I’m wearing it. (She checked her neck.) Oh?

Quickly running her hands over her neck, she found it empty. Y/N panicked at the thought of losing the necklace—it meant so much to her.

Y/N: Where did it go? Guys, please continue without me. I need to find it.

She almost burst into tears as she looked around.

Steven: Should I come with y—

She unintentionally ran off from there to the park they’d been in before, not letting him complete his sentence.

(Reaches the park they were in before.)

She squatted and bent, looking around and at the ground, trying to find her necklace when Y/N accidentally bumped into someone while her eyes were stuck on the ground.

Y/N: Ouch… (looks up) I’m sorry, I was in a hurry. Are you okay?

??? : I’m fine… Are *you* alright? Be careful when you walk.

Y/N: Yes. Sorry, I need to go, I’m in a hurry.

Saying that, she left.
