Grade 3

Ally~

Today is my first day of third grade. I’m so nervous. I just moved to Los Angeles and don’t have any friends yet. I *really* want to make friends! Friends to play with, to swap lunches with during break.

“Be a good girl. Good luck!” My mom kissed my cheek before I went into the new classroom. The teacher introduced me to everyone, and they all stared. I felt so nervous.

I sat at an empty seat in the back of the room, and then a tiny boy came late and sat right beside me. He had a bowl cut, a mischievous smile, and a backpack that was way too big for him. His eyes were really pretty and sparkly. He carefully laid out all his school supplies on the table. He glanced at me for a second, then looked away.

It was the first time my heart ever beat like that.

It was because of Jay Park.

“Just give me her number.” I asked my best friend, Ally. She’s really good at giving dating advice and setting me up with pretty girls.

“Stop dating all my close friends. You’re so irritating.” She flicked my forehead, and I winced.

“It’s not my fault all your close friends are hot!” I stuck my tongue out. She rolled her eyes. Now that I think about it, it’s kinda true—I *have* dated all her friends. She’s also always the third wheel on almost all my dates. The girls have been understanding, though, since Ally and I are close like siblings.

“Whatever! I’m done giving you shit. Do it yourself.” She went back to her phone and sighed.

“Ally, *please*!” I did aegyo and cooed until she gave in. After ten years of knowing her, I know all her weaknesses. “I’m gonna be nice to your friend. I won’t break her heart.”

“You’ve said that how many times? I’ve lost count, playboy.” She grabbed my cheeks and pinched them hard, making them go numb. Ally is *strong*—she did Taekwondo from elementary through middle school, and she’s kicked me a lot. I’m actually scared of her sometimes.

“You’re so mean! I’m gonna tell my mom you’re bullying me!” I faked a cry, and she just aggressively pushed me.

Since our university is only a few minutes from home, we don’t have to worry about dorms or being away from our parents. Our families have created a strong bond over time, and I’m close enough to them to be able to snitch on Ally—my favorite pastime activity.

Actually, her parents treat me like their own child. She also has an older sister, Nat, who’s a nurse. She already lives on her own, so Ally spends most of her time with me.

“Dinner time! You two are fighting again?” My mom barged into my room, walking in on Ally and me wrestling.

“Auntie, he keeps trying to ask for my friend’s number.” She yelled at the top of her lungs. I covered her mouth with my hand, and she quickly pushed it away, twisting my arm.

Oh yeah, she’s the biggest snitch too… that’s why we’re best friends.

“Ouchie!” I slapped her hand away.

“So, you chose death.” She was about to jump me again when my mom pulled her away and took her to the dining area. I followed behind them and helped prepare the food.

“Don’t you two ever get exhausted? Why don’t you date instead of arguing all the time?” My mother joked, and I choked on my rice. That’s the only thing we love avoiding—getting shipped by our parents. It’s so uncomfortable. Very repetitive too.

“Never.” Ally eyed me down from across the table. We’re going to go at this for about two days to a week, at most.

“Never.” I smirked.

“We’re never gonna finish practicing these questions. Stop being so annoying!” I yelled at Jay. He’s still bothering me for my friend’s number. We have a test on Wednesday, and I’m so not prepared. He doesn’t even care.

“I’ll stop being annoying… just slip me her number, maybe?” His long eyelashes fluttered, and my blood pressure increased. For the last time! I’m not setting him up with my friends again.

“Goodbye, then. Go study by yourself.” I began packing my stuff. Just as I was about to leave his room, he suddenly hugged me from behind.

It’s normal… we hug all the time. I still feel things in my chest whenever he does so. I hate it.

“Do you wanna go out with me?” Jay spun me around to face him.
