Chapter 2: Friends in the Shadows

The showcase ended, but her presence lingered like the trail of a comet.

Even as students spilled out of the arena, their voices rose in excitement, carrying her name.

"Did you see her spins? Unreal!"

"She's going to dominate competitions."

"She barely even looked nervous..."

Sylvia walked through the crowd with that same composed expression, as though none of it touched her. The new star, and she acted like it was nothing. The other students were drawn to her, yet intimidated. Admiration mixed with hesitation.

And then there was me.

Kael Veylen. Future heir of a business empire, campus golden boy, excelling in everything I touched — music, fencing, academics. People said I shone like a diamond. But diamonds, after all, are cold things.

She didn't know me yet. And for the first time, I wanted someone to.

I found her near the back garden, where the lamplight spilled golden over the snow. She was alone, lacing her boots tighter, her breath misting in the cold. I hesitated for a moment, then spoke.

"You skate like the ice belongs to you."

Her head lifted, eyes sharp as frost. For a heartbeat, I wondered if I'd overstepped. But then she smiled — faint, small, like the crack of light between clouds.

"Or maybe I belong to the ice," Sylvia said softly.

That answer. That voice. I knew right then she wasn't like anyone else.

I sat on the bench opposite her, casually — or at least I tried. "I'm Kael. I play piano. And... maybe I can help you if you ever get tired of the ice. Music balances things."

She tilted her head, amused. "I can't play at all. My fingers freeze up on the keys."

"Then you'll need a teacher," I said with a grin.

And just like that, the wall between us cracked. Not gone, not yet, but a start. A friendship born in the shadows of winter — quiet, fragile, but real.

That night, neither of us could have known what it would lead to.
