Part 25
Completed, First published Mar 02, 2026
A stifling heat clings to the polished mahogany of the Bellona Club, a heat not of summer but of simmering resentments and long-held grievances. The air itself seems to thicken with the scent of stale tobacco and suppressed scandal. Within its opulent, yet subtly decaying, walls, a web of interconnected lives unravels with the discovery of a suicide – or is it murder? – amongst the retired military elite. The narrative descends into a claustrophobic examination of fractured reputations, where honour is a brittle façade and the weight of past glories crushes the present. Shadows lengthen in the dim corridors, mirroring the secrets each member guards with a desperate ferocity. A pervasive unease seeps from the very stones of the building, a sense that the ghosts of broken men haunt the club’s every corner. The investigation isn't merely about solving a death; it’s about peeling back layers of pride, envy, and regret, revealing the rot beneath the veneer of respectability. A suffocating atmosphere of suspicion permeates every encounter, leaving the reader gasping for air alongside those trapped within the Club’s gilded cage. The unraveling truth is as unwelcome as a draught in a sealed room, promising not clarity, but a chilling descent into the darkness of men broken by their own histories.
